About Us

Old Buckenham Airfield was built by Taylor Woodrow Ltd. in 1942. It was the home of the 453rd Bomber Group until May 1945. We are proud to still use their logo today.

The airfield went through a full transformation during the late 1990s, which saw the old runway re-surfaced creating a new 800m tarmac runway, new hangars and a well appointed Club House. The first student to fly solo did so in January 1998.

There has been a registered flying training organisation here since 1998 and the current management took over Old Buckenham Aero Club in 2006.

Restaurant

A popular attraction to Old Buckenham visitors − by air or road is the welcoming restaurant − open on Thursday, Friday, Saturday & Sundays.

The food is good, the prices reasonable, the service cheerful and the clean & bright seating area gives a good view of the flying. In warm weather, enjoy the extensive terrace area for even better views of the flying.

Our typical menu offers all−day breakfasts, burgers with especially nice chips, bacon sandwiches, salads, vegetarian options, coffee, tea & cold drinks − and as a bonus for those not flying, we are licensed. Come and enjoy the hospitality!

The Club Room and Office

Old Buckenham Aero Club provides a small, friendly and flexible flying school which prides itself in having a professional but relaxed approach to aviation. It is staffed by highly experienced instructors with both military and civil backgrounds who, over the years, have had a high success rate in helping students gain their pilot’s licences.

The school benefits from operating from an airfield which is ideally placed for flying training in East Anglia, being well away from the kind of controlled airspace used by commercial flights. The open skies of Norfolk and Suffolk are perfect for recreational flying and any user of an airfield like this, which is totally devoted to recreation, can be confident that their training and pleasure flying can progress unhindered.

This year has seen two major developments which will add to the enjoyment and opportunities of our members. Firstly we have relocated to new offices on the airfield; we now have a swish suite of rooms which comprise not only the usual reception and briefing rooms but also a comfortable Crew Room. Secondly we have just started to operate a Piper Super Cub and can offer Tail-Wheel conversion courses, private hire (subject to check-out) and additional Trial Lessons.

We have already organised fly-aways this year to the Battle of Britain Memorial flight and the Shuttleworth collection with similar trips being planned for later in the year.
