OLD BUCKENHAM AIRFIELD SAVED AND PLANNING FOR A BRIGHT FUTURE (Sept 11 )
Touchdown Aero Centre Ltd, the operators of Old Buckenham Airfield, are today pleased to announce that the future of the airfield as one of 161 licensed aerodromes in the UK has been secured.
Due to the economic climate the future of the airfield had been in doubt and a gradual decline of services and activity had taken hold over the last few years.
Thanks, in large part, to the efforts of a group of volunteers, the airfield is already seeing an increase in aviation activity and considerable success in attracting non aviation visitors to what is one of the most picturesque sites in the UK.
Office, storage and workshop space has been made available and already large areas of previously unused buildings have been let. This has involved the opening of a business park, which is already 80% let in just two weeks.
The once popular 453 Diner is under new management and will shortly be open 7 days and serving alcohol again.
At the heart of this re-birth is a determination to hold a wide range of events and activities to attract the public, and not just the aviation community.
Jimmy Stewart and Walter Matthau were both based here during the second world war and the airfield is pleased and proud to house the memorial to 366 US serviceman who died serving from here.
A far larger program of events is planned and the airfield is available to all manner of classic car and other clubs as a spectacular venue.
Old Buckenham has long being known as one of Norfolk's friendliest airfields. We'd love all your readers to pay us a visit and see that, when planning a trip in Norfolk, Old Buckenham is a must.

Old Buckenham Aero Club Hosts May Arnold Scheme Meeting (May 11 )
During the dark days of World War II, the uncertain British weather and ever present threat of the German Luftwaffe meant that the skies over the UK were no place for eager young men to learn to fly.To overcome these problems the British Government sought to establish Aircrew Training Schemes in a number of locations both within, and outside, the British Empire (Commonwealth). The United States of America was one of the locations identified and negotiations commenced to enable British Airmen to undertake flying training in the (then) neutral USA.The negotiations were successful, and a number of schemes were established, amongst them the Arnold Scheme.
Old Buckenham Aero Club hosted nearly 40 visitors including veterans and their guests for this month's Arnold Scheme meeting.

Stearman Attracting People From Far and Wide (March 11 )
In March Old Buckenham Aero Club welcomed a visitor who had made a very special journey for a flight in the Vintage Stearman.
Mr Jimenez travelled all the way from Madrid in Spain to enjoy his 20 minute trial lesson. Upon his return home he sent the following email to thank Gerry for the flight.
"Do you know when you have a goal, and on the way to it something
unexpected arises and takes you higher than planned?
Well, that's what happened to us last weekend. The flight on that
Yellow Wonder was stirring, as expected, but was nothing compared
with our unexpected reward. That's was meeting an A-class gentleman
of the air, and the joy and little enlightment it provided to us
would made it well worth the whole trip, even if the weather wouldn´t
allow us to fly."
Best wishes :)
Diego Jimenez

Old Buckenham Aero Club's Super Cub Featured in Pilot Magazine (September 2010)
"Back inside the new clubhouse for my debrief, I’m told I hadn’t frightened the hell out of my instructor and there were just a few details which could be easily sorted. A full course would take me through much more; effects of loading, acceleration runs with the tail up into flying attitude and then down again, engine failure on take-off then three-point and two-point ‘wheelie’ landings. Five hours which could ideally be completed in two days for continuity. Obviously I’m hooked, on the tailwheel flying and the Super Cub. Looks like I just might have to go back and finish the job."
You can find Jesse's full review on the Super Cub in the current October issue of Pilot Magazine. |
