USAAF 453RD BOMBARDMENT GROUP OF THE 8TH AIRFORCE

Hollywood Legend Jimmy Stewart was the first Operations Officer of Old Buckenham when it started life with its first and most important residents; USAAF 453rd Bombardment Group of the 8th Air Force.

 

The 453rd flew 259 mission in B-24 Liberators. They dropped 15,804 tonnes of bombs and in the process lost 58 aircraft. Most importantly 366 serviceman lost their lives serving from Old Buckenham.

 

The 453rd Museum also includes the 8th Air Force Heritage Gallery which tells the personal stories of US Serviceman and Women who were based in East Anglia during WWII.
